By Sandy Jordan | Last Updated December 31, 2019

Is your lower back pain bothering you every night? Does it hurt very badly when you wake up every morning? I want to tell you that you are not alone.

Many people are struggling with the same issue. Some turn to medicine and surgery, while others make small changes in their lifestyles.

For example, getting the best futon mattress for your back. Is this method really effective?

Spoiler: It has been working wonders for a lot of people already. If you’re open-minded about trying out this option, keep reading on below to see the most comfortable ones for you!

Is a Futon Mattress Good for Your Back?

To be honest, the answer really comes down to the condition of your back and your personal preference.

Having said that, a futon mattress has proven to work effectively for people with back pain over time. To a certain extent, a futon mattress is good for your back.

There is plenty of anecdotal evidence pointing to these exact same benefits, including this one:

Many clinical studies have also shown that letting your personal preference guide you will be the best way to choosing the most suitable mattress.

Even more, you can shoot for mattresses that are medium-firm if possible. This ensures that you won’t sink in too much and won’t be bothered by rock-hard padding.

Keep in mind that if you wake up in the morning feeling the pain in your back and can get rid of it in 15 minutes or so, you’re probably on the wrong mattress. It’s high time you got a new one.

I would also advise you take advantage of the sleep trials many mattress companies offer. For instance, try it out for 90 days to see if it fits you.

If not, return it and get your money back.

Milliard 6-Inch Memory Foam Tri-fold Mattress

Meet your soon-to-be favorite futon mattress! At a high level, this is a tri-fold mattress that can act as a standalone bed with no issues.

The first highlight that’s worth mentioning is its material. Although this bed is inspired by the Japanese futon, it doesn’t take away that premium foam that many people love.

Technically, the mattress is constructed with high-quality memory foam that is best known for its therapeutic properties. There are many air holes inside the material to keep the bed well-ventilated.

Milliard also uses an ultra-soft bamboo cover to wrap up the bed. This cover gives a nice, soft touch and feels very smooth on the skin.

Beyond the design, you can rest assured that this bed is fully CertiPUR-US certified. It is completely free of any toxic heavy metals and ozone depletion.

What’s nice about this mattress is that its bottom is non-slip. Pretty neat, right?

Additionally, you’ll be blown away when laying on the bed for the first time. Putting it precisely, it feels like heaven to your back.

I also like that they give us a well-made carrying bag as well. With it, you can take the mattress on your next camping trip.

The bed doesn’t sleep very hot either. On a 90F day or night, you’ll still get a restful and pain-free sleep that’s absolutely fantastic.

Well, the only drawback I do need to point out is that the size can be quite narrow for big folks. It works well for slender, tall, or even young sleepers.

Ultimately, this is a worth-it futon mattress. Many people have bought and enjoyed sleeping on it. Give your back an opportunity to try this one out!

Pros

  • Cozy & cushy
  • Supportive
  • Space-saving
  • Lightweight
  • Healthy materials
  • Well-ventilated

Cons

  • Not ideal for bigger sleepers

FULI Japanese Traditional Shiki Futon High Grade Floor Mattress

First thing first: This is a 100% Japan-made futon mattress. It follows the traditional style that you will see in many Japanese houses.

You can choose between the Twin size and Full size. Each of them also has a plus size (i.e. Twin XL and Full XL).

You should be aware, however, although the sizes are described in US sizes, the actual size of the mattress may vary.

For example, the standard US Twin is 38 x 75 inches, right?

This model’s Twin is actually 39 x 75 inches. You see, there are some slight differences. Keep that in mind when buying!

On the outside of the mattress, you’ll have this nice, soft cotton fabric cover. It feels amazing when you touch it.

On the inside, the mattress is stuffed with 100% polyester. In my opinion, this is not the best material. However, in terms of cushioning, it does get the job done.

Sleeping on this mattress is very, very comfortable! Remember the tip about choosing the medium-firm mattress for your bad back? Well, this is it!

Let me put it this way. It feels firm and sturdy enough, so you’ll get a great foundation to sleep on. Yet, it’s amazingly soft and comfy. I really love sleeping and rolling around on this futon!

When you’re not using it, you can roll it up with ease and put it away. This is a great feature for those who are living in small houses that need to free up space.

Another cool tip you can apply is letting the mattress air out in the sun for a while. This helps the inside content fluff up a bit more nicely.

If you don’t like the idea of sleeping on the floor, you can put the mattress on a bed frame. Because futon mattresses, in general, are quite thin, you may feel through the crossbars of your frame when setting it up this way.

Over time, the bed might hollow out in the middle due to your body weight. When this happens, you can use the method of airing it out in sunlight. The heat will help the polyester to naturally fluff up again.

In short, I think this is a good-quality mattress that delivers exactly what is advertised. Your back will be grateful to you for getting yourself this mattress!

Pros

  • Made in Japan
  • Hygroscopic cotton
  • Easy to store
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight
  • Amazing for your back

Cons

  • Non-standard US sizes

EMOOR Japanese Traditional Futon

For two people who want to sleep on a comfortable mattress, this Queen size futon mattress may be your way to go!

If you’re not very familiar, Emoor is a reputable and experienced maker of these Japanese mattresses.

This particular model is made from 100% cotton on the cover. Inside, there is a polyester filling sandwiched between the soft top and bottom quilt.

A point that I need to bring to your attention is the thickness. I’ve heard folks complaining about the actual thickness as compared to the advertised one.

This issue may be caused specifically by the stuffing and folding during shipping and usage.

Some simple way you can go about this is drying the mattress under the sun. Let the heat help expand the stuffing. You may also use a fan to airdry it. See if that works.

Moving over to the materials, the cover is anti-bacterial and anti-tick. To get these features, Emoor uses quaternary ammonium salt and pyrethroid. These are effective for 2-3 years.

I think this aspect is one Emoor could be more transparent about to assure customers about the solid safety of their materials. If you don’t like the included sheet, you can get your own easily.

Sleeping on this mattress is a blessing for your back. Although it is a futon mattress, it is considerably thick (once fluffed up).

You do need to go through some adjustment period to create a nice relationship with the futon. Also, make sure to keep your floor clean to keep the bed bugs away.

So, would I recommend this futon? Sincerely yes! Don’t forget to get a sheet that you feel is right for you and clean the floor regularly. If you’ve done all that, you deserve a restful sleep on your futon!

Pros

  • Traditional futon style
  • Japan-made
  • Comfortable
  • Quite thick
  • 100% cotton cover
  • Deep & pain-free sleep

Cons

  • Thickness issues

Zinus Memory Foam 4 Inch Tri-Fold Comfort Portable Folding Mattress

I think I don’t need to introduce Zinus to those of you who are very familiar with this brand. For those who are new, Zinus is a trustworthy bed maker.

This futon mattress is their take on the traditional Japanese futon. Zinus makes it in a way that would fit the style of Western users perfectly.

As you may expect, this is an all-foam mattress. As with any other models, the materials have been fully CertiPUR-US verified to be safe and non-toxic. Whew!

For your back support, you’ll actually get 3 types of foam:

The first one is the high-density base foam. Then comes the Viscolatex responsive foam for elasticity support. Topping it all up is the well-known memory foam layer. Pretty cool, right?

In addition to that, the materials absorb moisture quite well. They can eliminate odors and leave you refreshed when waking up.

Another cool thing: You can remove the polyester cover and wash it easily. It is not too flimsy.

You do need to be aware that this mattress is slightly on the cheaper side. You can’t be very picky at this price point.

Some customers notice the seams tearing apart. To prevent this from happening, you can treat it with care and handle it carefully.

Other than that, if you’re fine with the specs, you will get yourself one hell of a deal. Then again, the choice is up to you!

Pros

  • All-foam mattress
  • CertiPUR-US certified materials
  • Washable polyester cover
  • Affordable price
  • Supportive

Cons

  • Seams tearing up issues

MustHome Japanese Traditional Tatami Mat/Futon Mattress

Seeing the final product on the list, you’ll be blown away by this incredibly unique mattress.

It is, in my opinion, the perfect combination of the foam mattress and the traditional tatami (floor mat).

This thing is super thin. It’s only 1.2 inches, to be exact. Inside it is foam. The top cover is made from 100% natural rush grass.

This material has a distinct smell to it. You may not like it at first, but you’ll get used to it. It’s not that unpleasant at all.

On the bottom, they have this non-woven fabric layer. This helps tremendously in keeping the mattress in place. You don’t need a metal base to hold it.

For folks with back problems, this is the closest thing you can get to sleeping comfortably on the floor. Personally, I love it!

Because you have back pain already, you wouldn’t want something that’s super heavy like traditional big mattresses. Well, good news, this mattress is incredibly light!

Storing it away when not in use is also an easy-peasy task. Fold it up in three and pop it into your closet! It couldn’t be any easier.

Because the top surface is made from rush grass, you’d want to avoid exposing it to direct sunlight. Extreme rays can cause the grass to turn yellow and age quickly.

When you notice some dust particles on the surface, you can wipe them off with a dry towel or cloth. If you use a wet towel, you can air dry it later in some ventilated area.

Although this product is not very popular yet, it is certainly packed with a lot of value. I recommend it if you need a very firm and rigid surface for your back throughout the night. Great product!

Pros

  • Unique design
  • Natural rush grass
  • Non-slip bottom
  • Very close to the ground
  • Easy to clean
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • Overly thin for some folks

Which One Would You Choose?

Over to you now, which one would your back choose? Is it the all-foam mattress or the grass mattress? Regardless of your choice, I hope you’ll get the best futon mattress for your needs and back pain. Have a safe & comfortable sleep!
